Jorogumo (Spider Woman) Demon Mug - Custom #6: Green Eyes, Green Eyeshadow
Jorogumo (Spider Woman) Demon Mug - Custom #6: Green Eyes, Green Eyeshadow
About the Mug
She’s a beast! It’s an immense mug, 7.75” tall, 6.75” wide, 6” deep, holding 32 ounces. I’ll only make about 50 of them.
This one is unique color combo of eyes and eyeshadow. “Deluxe” coloring as compared to base model: Realistic joro spider coloring, stain-detailed teeth, red lipstick.
About the Demon
Jorogumo, the Orb Weaver Spider Demon, is one of my favorite Japanese Yokai (spirits/demons)! Although she’s now known as “entangled bride”, back in the Edo period her name translated to “spider whore” (different times, am I right?) The story is that, when an orb weaver spider lives 400 years, it grows gigantic and gains magical abilities. Jorogumo can present as either a spider with the head of a woman, or just as a beautiful woman, with the intent to seduce and exsanguinate unsuspecting men.
The Japanese Demon Mug Series
This is the 4th mug design in a series of Japanese Demon Mugs. My plan is to release about 2 mug designs per year, with about 50 mugs per design. There are SO many cool Japanese Yokai, so I’ll be at it a while.
The Process
As always, I hand sculpt the original from oil-clay (not 3D printed!). Everything from molds to casting to glazing is done in my home studio. This is one of the most detailed mugs I’ve made, with hours of precision hand-painting put into each one.
Mug Care
The super-matte look is achieved by using underglaze instead of glaze. Take extra care, as this finish is more susceptible to scratches, chips and stains than glazed ceramics. Hand washing is recommended. If your mug has gold on it, don’t put it in the microwave… it’s real gold!!!
